NFL combine could be canceled because of COVID-19

One of the biggest events on the NFL calendar is in danger of being canceled.

The NFL scouting combine, where teams evaluate NFL draft prospects every February in Indianapolis, could be completely scrapped, according to ESPN. The league will decide this week, per the report, whether to cancel the combine, have a scaled-down version or use regional combines.

One possibility discussed is pushing the combine back to April, but that would likely have a dramatic effect on the NFL’s offseason schedule as the draft is usually held in April. Furthermore, the NCAA is holding the entire men’s 2021 March Madness tournament in the greater Indianapolis area, which could derail any designs the NFL may have on hosting an April combine at the Colts’ stadium.

The NFL combine is the league’s first major event every year after the Super Bowl. Super Bowl 2021 is set for Feb. 7 in Tampa.
